STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich.Local 4 News is getting out of the studio and hitting the road to be In Your Neighborhood! We’re showcasing what makes our communities great!

There are a lot of things happening in Sterling Heights. The second-largest suburb of Detroit has a wide selection of shops, more than 15 miles of dedicated trails, dozens of parks and green spaces (including the iconic Dodge Park), the Michigan Lottery Amphitheatre at Freedom Hill and so much more.

The Sterling Heights Initiative for Neighborhood Excellence (SHINE) is a citywide cleanup program aimed at protecting property values by encouraging all residents to maintain the exterior of their homes. It’s especially helpful for residents who are unable to maintain their property due to physical or age-related conditions.

SHINE volunteers meet at First Church on Saturday, May 4 at 9:30 a.m. You can read more here.

The annual Plant Exchange at the Sterling Heights Nature Center will take place May 11. Residents are invited to bring plants from their gardens to share and exchange with others.

Get ready to turn your spring cleaning into cash at the Treasure Hunter’s Market! Whether you have items lying around the house, garage, shed or storage unit, this market is the perfect place to sell them.

With thousands of shoppers flocking to Dodge Park, you’ll have a great chance to find buyers for your treasures.

Sterling Heights’ 45th Annual Memorial Day activities will start at 9 a.m. on May 27 in the City Center Courtyard with a solemn tribute to fallen veterans.

With the theme “Salute to Service: Honoring Heroes & Innovations,” the event will feature remarks from notable figures such as Judge Stephen Sierawski, Mayor Michael C. Taylor and Arts Commission Chairperson Jeanne Schabath-Lewis.

Following the ceremony, the parade begins at 10 a.m. at the City Center parking lot and heading south down Dodge Park Road.

June

Dodge Park Thursdays are a highly anticipated event that draws in thousands of residents and visitors every year. With a bustling farmers market, mouthwatering food trucks, a free concert in the nearby amphitheatre, and a rotating beer garden showcasing different breweries each week, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

Residents can showcase their skateboarding skills on June 15 at the Sterling Skate Bash. This judged skateboarding contest gives each skater two chances to put together their best runs. Awards will be given to the top three skaters in each age division.

July

The Sterlingfest Art & Music Festival is a highly anticipated summer event in Michigan that offers a blend of art, music, food and family fun. With more than 150,000 visitors annually, this festival has earned a reputation for being one of the state’s most respected and family-friendly festivals. From July 25 to July 27, the festival showcases the talents of more than 100 arts and crafts vendors.

October

Sterling Frights consolidates everything great about the season into one event. This free event features cider, donuts, music, hay rides, a straw maze, crafts, rides and more.

December

A Sterling Christmas brings holiday music, a petting farm, food and drinks, pony rides, horse-drawn wagon rides, train rides, ice skating, warming fires and more to Sterling Heights.

The free event takes place on Dec. 7 and will feature Santa and the tree-lighting ceremony.
