Flashpoint: UAW President Shawn Fain on politics, ‘record’ contracts

DETROIT – On the Feb. 4, 2024, edition of Flashpoint we spoke with a man who many would characterize as the most prominent labor leader in the country.

The UAW’s fight against the Big Three put Shawn Fain in the nightly headlines, and so of course did the record contracts he negotiated.

Last week, he bestowed the union’s political blessing on president Biden, who arrived in Michigan this past week to shake on it. Many have wondered when the Biden campaign machine would start to hum -- and this visit didn’t quite check that box. Pretty much everything about the visit was off the public radar.

We’re going to talk with Shawn Fain not only about politics and Donald Trump calling him a weapon of mass destruction for autoworkers, but we’ll also take a look at what that record contract looks like with a little space in the rearview mirror.

Also, in coming to Michigan, the president was visiting the state with its large Arab American community and as he was visiting, a group of Arab American activists were announcing their intent to abandon Biden over his policies in Israel. What does that mean to president Biden’s chances of hanging on to this critical state?
