Flashpoint: Detroit mayor talks crime numbers, 2024 agenda

Watch Flashpoint every Sunday at 10 a.m. on Local 4 News and Local 4+

DETROIT – Detroit city leaders feel like it’s off to a good start on the crime front.

New numbers were released last week showing big drops in violent crime in Detroit. We can’t really compare crime rates to years past, because Detroit is a much smaller city than it once was. But year over year, fewer murders, fewer shootings, fewer carjackings. Is Detroit doing some things right? Or are we part of a national trend coming out of the pandemic?

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is on Flashpoint to discuss this. We’ll also talk about some big things on the Detroit calendar in 2024 -- but about a roadblock on his agenda. He’s had trouble getting his land value tax plan through Lansing.

Also, next week, the Detroit Regional Chamber is hosting a day of conversations on growing Michigan’s population. This morning we’re going to have our first conversation with Michigan’s new chief growth officer.
